The Illusion of Independence
Despite gaining independence from British rule in 1947, Pakistan has faced obstacles, on its path to achieving genuine freedom. The vision of a thriving nation as imagined by Quaid e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah appears to be slipping away. Instead, the nation is confronted with challenges that erode the values of independence.
Erosion of Democratic Values
One of the worries we face is the decline of principles. The strong influence of the military on governance has resulted in a series of puppet administrations lacking support. This secretive military group controls state functions hindering democratic advancements. Amnesty International reports that the military's involvement in politics has significantly weakened structures and processes. The United Nations has also raised concerns about the lack of openness and responsibility in Pakistan's administration.
Moreover, corruption worsens the situation with Transparency International ranking Pakistan as one of the top corrupt nations globally. This corruption does not only deplete the resources, but also diminishes public confidence in government institutions. The judiciary, which should serve as a safeguard against executive authority is often viewed as compromised and subject, to military influences.
Suppression of Freedom
In any society the rights, to freedom of expression, media and association are crucial. Unfortunately, in Pakistan these rights face challenges. Journalists, activists and political workers often experience arrests, crackdowns and even physical abuse for speaking out against the government. The recent report by Amnesty International for 2022/23 sheds light on cases of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings targeted at dissenters. Additionally, the UN Human Rights Office has documented incidents of harassment and intimidation directed at human rights advocates.
The media environment in Pakistan is heavily regulated, with journalists encountering threats and violence when covering topics. The government has implemented controls on social media platforms through measures, like firewalls. Intentionally slowed internet speeds to suppress opposing voices. This digital crackdown does not only restrict freedom of speech but inhibits the development of the IT industry and impacts the livelihoods of freelance workers who depend on a reliable digital infrastructure.
Journalists Under Threat
In Pakistan journalists encounter challenges and risks. The tragic incident involving Arshad Sharif, a known journalist highlights the perils that media professionals endure. Sharifs untimely demise, in Kenya in October 2022 is viewed as an act of violence. His passing has sparked concerns about the safety of journalists who dare to question forces in Pakistan.
Other media figures like Moeed Pirzada and Sabir Shakir have been compelled to leave the country due to threats on their lives. These individuals have been subjected to probes related to terrorism and allegations of promoting unrest, seen by many, as efforts to stifle dissenting opinions. Various organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists and other global bodies have strongly criticized these actions. Called for safeguarding the rights of journalists.

Injustice Against Former PM Imran Khan and PTI
The political situation, in Pakistan has been quite turbulent for ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan and his political party, Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI). Following his removal from office, Khan and his followers have encountered a string of crackdowns shedding light on the concerns surrounding political oppression and violations of human rights, in the nation.
Arrests and Detentions
Numerous PTI followers and advocates have been taken into custody on grounds with many believed to be politically driven. Amnesty International has recorded cases of PTI members being detained unfairly sometimes kept in isolation, for durations. These arrests are seen as part of a plan to diminish the party's impact and stifle opposing voices.
Military Courts and Unfair Trials
Many PTI members are currently undergoing trials, in courts a move that has sparked disapproval from global human rights groups. The employment of courts for cases is viewed as breaching international laws and as a way to sidestep the standard legal procedures. Human Rights Watch has urged for a halt, to this practice stressing the importance of open trials.
Media Blackout
The press, in Pakistan has received orders to steer clear of reporting on PTI events essentially leading to a blackout on the party's engagements. This censorship spans to media channels well, where content in support of PTI is frequently restricted or taken down. The absence of media attention mutes the party's narrative and withholds essential information, from the public regarding the country's political landscape.
Harassment and Intimidation
Members and backers of PTI have shared instances of harassment and intimidation, by government officials. This involves monitoring, warnings and acts of violence with the intention to deter involvement. The UN Human Rights Office has voiced worry about these strategies highlighting their contribution, to fostering a climate of fear and suppression.
Impact on Democracy
The recent actions taken against PTI have consequences, for the system in Pakistan. They weaken the values of diversity and fair play which're crucial for a robust democracy. Singling out a party that has its roots all over the country, establishes a risky standard and diminishes trust in democratic institutions, among the public.
International Condemnation
The global community has acknowledged the challenges experienced by Imran Khan and PTI. Findings from Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the United Nations have underscored the violations of rights. Advocated for prompt changes. These groups have pressed the government to uphold principles and safeguard political freedoms.

The Human Cost
The human cost of these repressive measures is immense. Political workers and activists live in constant fear of abduction and torture. Families are torn apart, and the social fabric of the nation is weakened. The lack of respect for human rights and democratic principles casts a long shadow over the celebrations of independence.
Balochistan, the resource abundant province, in Pakistan has been a focal point for movements advocating for rights amidst governmental suppression. The Baloch community has persistently called for increased autonomy and rights through demonstrations and activism. Unfortunately, these efforts have often been met with repression by the authorities.
Women have played a role in protests leading marches to demand justice against enforced disappearances and unlawful killings. The Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) has spearheaded these movements organizing sit ins and rallies despite facing crackdowns by security forces. In response the government has resorted to arrests, violent dispersals and live ammunition usage resulting in casualties.
The United Nations and various human rights organizations have criticized the actions of the government in Balochistan citing infringements on rights and excessive use of force against peaceful demonstrators. The ongoing turmoil in Balochistan sheds light on issues of oppression and the fight for human rights, in Pakistan.

A Call for True Independence
As we commemorate the 77th Independence Day, it is imperative to reflect on the true meaning of freedom. Independence is not merely the absence of foreign rule; it is the presence of justice, equality, and respect for human rights. Pakistan’s journey towards true independence requires a collective effort to uphold democratic values, protect freedoms, and ensure that every citizen can live without fear.
It is important to address these injustices and strive for a climate where every voice is valued and honored. Achieving independence entails more, than breaking free from foreign domination; it involves establishing a fair and democratic society.
Commemorating Pakistan's Independence Day is an opportunity to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by those who fought for the country's liberty. It also serves as a moment to recognize the challenges and recommit ourselves to shaping a Pakistan that embodies the values of democracy, justice and human dignity.
Looking back on history while envisioning the future this occasion reminds us of the principles that laid the foundation for Pakistan's formation. It calls upon all citizens to work towards a nation where justice reigns supreme individual rights are safeguarded, and laws are upheld. Achieving independence is an endeavor that demands united efforts from all members of society.
The contribution of civil society entities such as human rights groups, journalists and activists is pivotal in this journey. Their unwavering dedication to shedding light on injustices and advocating for change plays a role, in holding authorities accountable.
It is crucial to support and safeguard these voices to uphold the well-being of our democracy.
The youth, in Pakistan, who embody the future of our nation should be empowered to shape the fate of the country. Education, involvement and opportunities for engagement in politics are essential for nurturing a generation that respects and champions democratic ideals.
Genuine freedom is attained when every individual regardless of their background can lead a life of respect and liberty. It entails establishing a community where economic prospects are accessible, to all social justice prevails and governance truly reflects the will of the people.
On this Independence Day commemoration let us reaffirm our dedication to these principles. Let us collaborate to construct a Pakistan that not respects past sacrifices but also sets the stage for a more equitable future. By confronting challenges and aspiring towards a society rooted in principles we can ensure that the essence of independence endures.
